Please can you confirm whether the eportfolio can be created using MS PowerPoint or would you prefer it to be created in HTML format.

There are lots of tools that students can use to create an eportfolio - PowerPoint is one of them, Ms Word or FrontPage would be equally good. I've seen some excellent eportfolios created with mind-mapping software. Students need to be able to create HTML pages with hyperlinks to items of evidence.  There'll be more details in the eportfolio guidance document which we're producing.  This should be out in September.

Could you also give me some information on how Edexcel are intending eportfolios to be submitted and how tracking and marking will be dealt with.  Will special software be used and if so, will this be available to centres.

We're considering developing a portal which centres can use to submit their work, although some may prefer to allow our moderators to visit the work in situ by giving us access to their VLE or web-based storage.  If all else fails, we will accept eportfolios on CD ROM.   We'll be issuing an eportfolio guidance document at the start of the autumn term which will provide further information about this.

As part of the eportfolio, will candidates be expected to include an implementation log?

Not as a general rule.  However, they may decide to keep a log of their practical activities for Units 4, 5 and 6 and include this in their eportfolios for these units.

Can students use Matchware's Mediator to create their e-books and eportfolios - there isn't a free viewer as far as I know but the presentations created in it can be exported to a standalone .exe file. Is this acceptable, or would you only allow .swf files generated by Mediator?

The .swf and .htm files that Mediator creates are fine.  It would appear that Mediator also generates a number of other files as part of the conversion process. I have a list of these from Matchware and will add them to the list of acceptable file formats shortly.

You specify that the eportfolio for Unit 1 must be no more than 15MB?  Iis this for the e-book or the whole eportfolio? james' sample e-book  takes up a lot of space without any significant multi-media components. I appreciate that these components can be compressed but it still seems a small allowance for the amount of elements required.

15 MB should be more than enough for the complete eportfolio for Unit 1.  James' is less than 1 MB.

Can we use the e-portfolio front sheets as the homepage for each unit and add links or a link to the evidence?

Yes, of course.

Can we submit our eportfolios on CD ROM?

The only method of submission for January will be CD ROM. We ' re exploring the ' e-dipping ' solution for centres using web-based storage, but this won' t be available to all centres initially.  Anyone interested in trialling this should let us know.

Can you please clarify if the 15 MB limit is for the whole eportfolio (in which case it will cover 3 units for Single Award students and 6 units for Double Award students) or is just for one unit,  such as Unit 1, The Information Age.  If we are hosting the eportfolios on our own servers, with access being given to Edexcel, surely a size limit is not a problem?  Also your guidance mentions that if the online access is not possible, then work can be submitted on CD ROM.  Again, there is no size constraint on a CD ROM.

Sorry if it isn't clear - it's 15 MB for each unit.  (Students produce a separate eportfolio for each unit.)  15 MB should be more than enough for the e-book.  We'll review this after the first round of moderation.  The CD ROM solution is only meant to be temporary and there are implications for speed of download if eportfolios are stored on the web and viewed on-line.

Is .mht is an allowable format.

Yes this is viewable in a browser.
